The conflict between the human need to collaborate and our instinctive pull towards individualisation exists as an ongoing negotiation in my figurative compositions.  The figures are caught in interdependent physical actions whose function, aim and outcome are ambiguous. Codependent for balance and success, their equilibrium is tenuous.  Compositional construction mirrors theme as I draw, erase and reconfigure the interlocking shapes, finding balanced interrelationships and then upending them. The structure settles at a point of jeopardy where balance and stability could easily fail. I paint the resulting composition in oil paint and acrylic, using the connecting forces of rhythm and interaction between coloured shapes to build the imagined event. The static and stable qualities of the interlocking shapes are beginning to fragment as I increasingly respond to the body’s experience of motility through space. My predominantly descriptive use of colour runs alongside a color response to embodied perceptions.  In a painted enactment of the dynamic interplay between people and context, I am searching to provide an image for shared universal recognition of bodily encounter,, and the metaphors it can hold.
